TMJ Treatment

Problems originating in the temporomandibular joints can often result in several painful symptoms and lead to secondary issues such as sleep bruxism which can damage the teeth and sleep apnea which is harmful to your whole body. At Glen Ellyn Dentistry, we can take a variety of approaches to addressing disorders of the temporomandibular joints to help our patients find relief while safeguarding their health.

What Is Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction?

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction refers to a disorder of the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). These are the joints that are located on either side of the face. They connect the jawbone to the rest of the skull and are responsible for the movements of the jawbone (opening, closing, shifting forward and backward, and moving side to side).

These joints can be subject to several different disorders that arise for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Genetics and birth defects
  • Disease and medical conditions
  • Misaligned jawbones
  • Malocclusion (crossbite, overbite, underbite, and open bite)
  • Sleep bruxism
  • Injuries and trauma to the face, mouth, jaw, or neck
  • Poor posture
  • Overuse
  • Excessive wear on teeth

Conditions that arise as a result of these issues that affect the TMJs are typically referred to as TMJ dysfunction, TMJ disorders, or simply TMJ or TMJD.

What Are the Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ dysfunction can cause various symptoms, and individuals with TMJ dysfunction might experience any combination of them. Symptoms of TMJD include:

  • Jaw pain
  • Jaw stiffness
  • Face pain
  • Lockjaw
  • Popping sounds in the TMJs
  • Popping or grinding sensations in the TMJs
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Frequent headaches and migraines
  • Tingling or numbness in the face, neck, or shoulders
  • Malocclusion
  • Bruxism (grinding the teeth and clenching the jaws)
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Telltale wear patterns on the teeth

If you experience any of these symptoms, you might suffer from a TMJ disorder. Our dentists can help you determine the underlying cause and find relief with an effective treatment.

What Are the Treatments for TMJ Dysfunction?

Treatments for TMJ dysfunction depend on the underlying cause of the problem. As a result, treatments vary greatly. Treatments to address problems with the temporomandibular joints include:

  • Orthodontics (braces, spacers, etc.)
  • Nightguards
  • Surgery
  • Treatment for sleep apnea
  • Restorative treatments to correct injuries or other damage

Most treatments for TMJ focus on correcting the alignment of the jawbones to reduce pressure on the temporomandibular joints.

To determine the TMJD treatment that is right for you, our dentists must first conduct a thorough evaluation and examination to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. This often includes a physical examination of the teeth, jawbones, and joints in addition to diagnostic imaging such as digital X-rays to examine the internal anatomy. Once we have determined the underlying cause or causes of the symptoms, we can recommend a treatment plan to correct and address the issues.
